I wrote the first draft of this song in the winter of 2021/2022, I forget exactly when. It was just called "Random bass riff" until I cobbled the lyrics together over about a week in late March 2022.
I suppose this song is my attempt at writing a Subdivisions-style song about being stuck in a middle class existence that you never wanted in the first place. It was a hard song to finish; it went through a LOT of edits and rewrites and in the end I just wanted to be done with it.
lyrics
Bright, shiny images and
Paste-on smiles
First past the post, yet somehow
Exiled
I chose the lane less travelled
Or so it seemed
Only to end up feeling
Deceived
Oh, no
How low can you go
Wipe that smirk off your face
Exit utopia
You have no right to feel displaced
Enter suburbia
I’ve got no inclination
To trust anyone
I’ve got to claw my way out
Like everyone
Oh, no
How low can you go
Wipe that smirk off your face
Exit utopia
You have no right to feel displaced
Enter suburbia
