This was the first all-new song I wrote for this album in September 2021. I wrote the whole thing on bass, Steve Harris-style. And, kind of fittingly, the first arrangement was a mess of riffs, key changes and nothing in the way of vocal melodies. That was a frequent problem throughout the writing process for this album.
I had some lyrics left over from a Black Distortion song called Trace, on which Joe ended up doing the lead vocals, so I sang them over the verse. Just kind of crowbarring the words in and they sort of fit. Then I did nothing for 6 months.
After releasing Madness Reigns and Dictator on March 4th, I felt creatively somewhat rejuvenated and this song was the next one I worked on. It went through a fair amount of rewriting, arranging and so on and while it's still not the most straight forward song I've ever written, it does kinda hang together now.
lyrics
I lay my body down
To decimate my thoughts
Over your strenuous objections
Hard fought
In darkened corridors
I wander aimlessly
You try to flick the switch
And offer reprieve
What on earth am I gonna do
Where the hell am I gonna go
You believe nothing ever glows
You recede thought I’d let you know
Death by a thousand cuts
A pattern evolved
Superfluous remorse
With nothing resolved
I lay my body down
You lay down with me
It is a different kind of future
We seek
What on earth am I gonna do
Where the hell am I gonna go
You believe nothing ever glows
You recede thought I’d let you know
